WINGATE, N.C.--The University of Alabama in Huntsville cross country teams won both the womenís and menís titles at the 2007 Wingate University Invitational Saturday at the Wingate University cross country facility. Sponsored by OrthoCarolina, the event also served as pre-regional races for the 2007 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional that will be hosted by Wingate on Nov. 3. All total, 238 runners finished todayís two races.
The number 19 team in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II womenís cross country top 25 rankings, the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers placed four runners in the top five and six in the top 10 to finish the Wingate University Invitational with 20 points. Charger junior Erin Zellers won the 6K race with a time of 23:20. UAH senior Caitlin Heider was second at 23:23, while freshman teammate Gwen Kyser placed third at 23:49.
On the team charts, Augusta State (Ga.) University was second with 87 points, host Wingate was third with 122 points and defending Wingate Invitational champion North Carolina Central University was fourth with 160 points. Lincoln Memorial University rounded out the top five with 163 points. Sixteen schools had runners complete the womenís 6K race (15 teams had enough runners finish to compile a team score).
North Greenville finished 15th with a team score of 399. Shana Sears was the top finisher for the Crusaders, crossing the tape 60th with a time of 28:43. To round out the Crusader contenders, Amy Givens finished 91st (31:04), Erin Davis 105th (36:17), Virginia right 107th (36:53), Brandy Clark 109th (37:56), and Chelsea West 110th (38:08).
