Comeback Falls Just Short Against Belmont Abbey

Tigerville, SC – A hard fought game ends in heart break as the North Greenville Crusaders fell to Belmont Abbey College 77 – 74. Belmont Abbey led for the majority of game with North Greenville making a comeback in the fourth quarter to challenge the top ranked Crusaders lead, despite being out scored in the previous three quarters. Coming off the team’s recent victory last Sunday over division I Furman; Haylee Luttrell, Savannah Hughes, and Karen Donehew all scored in double digits for North Greenville.

1st Quarter

Coach Angel McGowan and her team came ready to play in their second meeting with Belmont Abbey during the 2019 campaign as the team battled in the first quarter leading by five points (14 – 9) shortly after the first media timeout. The Crusaders, from North Greenville, shared the ball exceptionally well posting six assisted baskets in the first quarter. However, hot shooting for Belmont Abbey and a slew of missed opportunities by North Greenville gave Belmont the early lead at the end of the first quarter.

2nd Quarter

Belmont Abbey came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter due to a couple turnovers by North Greenville leading by as many as ten points at the 1:25 mark. North Greenville made a late push thanks for free throws from Savannah Hughes and Karen Donehew. Hughes played a key role scoring eight of her seventeen in the quarter, while the team totaled four turnovers leading to six points.

3rd Quarter

Coming out of half time North Greenville contested Belmont’s lead pulling to within two points thanks to a Savannah Hughes three pointer but Belmont Abbey strung together a 10 – 4 run and another 10 – 5 point run that ate up the majority of the quarter. North Greenville shot significantly less from three-point range in the third quarter ultimately making the difference in the scoring totals.

4th Quarter

Beginning the fourth quarter in the hole is nothing new to Coach McGowan and her girls as they have comeback three times this year in the fourth quarter to win. However, after trading blows for the majority of the quarter the Crusaders could not string together a run in the last two minutes of the game to overcome the seven-point lead Belmont held. Hughes, Luttrell, and Donehew scored the last twelve points for the Crusaders.

Individual

Savannah Hughes posted 17 points (Season High) and 3 assists.

Karen Donehew posted 14 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.

Haylee Luttrell scored 14 points, collected 4 rebounds, and forced 2 steals.

Kira Bell was the leading rebounder of the night posting 7 rebounds along with 8 points.

Upcoming
