Mars Hill, N.C. – Karen Donehew dropped 19-points while Cameron Carter and Briana Mann added 14-points each as NGU earned its first win of the 2016 season with a 67-55 win over Mars Hill.
The Crusaders led from tip off to final buzzer (save one tie which came early in the first quarter) on Wednesday night en-route to their first victory of the season. NGU led by as many as 17-points in the third quarter.
The Lions cut the lead to 11-points as the third quarter came to a close but the Crusaders answered back with a quick 4-0 scoring spurt to build their lead back to 13-points. Elizabeth Trentham and Mann would add two points each to give NGU a 51-36 lead.
Mars Hill had one last gasp in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as it cut North Greenville’s lead to six points, the closest the Lions had been to NGU since the second quarter. The road weary Crusaders lacked few answers on Wednesday night though as they responded with an 11-5 run in the final 2:55 to end any hopes of a comeback victory for the Lions.
The Crusaders shot 40% as a team Wednesday night, but got help from inside the lane, scoring 26-points in the paint. NGU also took advantage of 21 Lion turnovers by converting them into 17-points.
The Crusaders, now 1-2 on the season will play on their home court for the first time this season as they host Bob Jones University on Thursday night. Tipoff between the Crusaders and Bruins is scheduled for 5:30pm.
