Gaffney, S.C. - North Greenville came up just short in its bid for an upset on Tuesday night as third ranked Limestone edged the Crusaders 58-49.
Cameron Carter led all scorers with 21-points, Tuesday night, adding eight rebounds and two assists to her stat line. The Crusaders shot 30.6 from the field while the Saints shot just 31.3 percent. It was the second time this season the Crusaders held the Saints below their season average in scoring.
The Crusaders got off to a hot start while the Saints struggled early on. North Greenville jumped out to a quick eight point lead and quickly added to it as a three by Elizabeth Trentham made the score 11-0. NGU would carry a 13-point lead into the second period.
The Crusaders led by as many as 14-points in the second quarter but the Satins began to find some rhythm offensively, eventually cutting the lead to one point, with 3:37 left on the clock. NGU would finish the first half on top, as a three from Cameron Carter would earn the Crusaders a 36-31 advantage.
NGU continued to lead until the 27-second mark of the third until a three pointer from Limestone's Maurissa Lester earned the Saints their first lead of the game at 45-44. Paulette Addison would answer with a jumper at the other end to give NGU a one point lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
North Greenville would take the lead once more in the fourth quarter as a pair of Carter free throws made the score 48-47, following a made layup from the Saints. Limestone would answer once again on offense as the Saints took the one point lead again on a Peyton Buckholt layup.
The Saints would embark on a 9-1 run in the final minutes of the game as NGU ran out of gas offensively. The Crusaders trailed by just five with 3:37 left on the clock but the Crusaders would come up empty on their next three possessions as the Saints escaped with the Conference Carolinas victory.
North Greenville will wrap up its regular season on Friday night as it host Lees-McRae on Senior Nigh in Hayes Gymnasium. Tipoff between the Crusaders and Bobcats is scheduled for 5:30pm.
