Central, S.C.— After a thrilling opening round win in the NCCAA Regional tournament last night against Southern Wesleyan University, the North Greenville women’s basketball team is back on the road. With the Regional Championship on the line, they will be traveling back to Southern Wesleyan to take on Emmanuel College tonight.
The Lady Crusaders played Emmanuel once during the 2009-2010 regular season at the NCCAA Classic which was also held at Southern Wesleyan. The first game between the two squads was closely contested but eventually the Lions pulled ahead by eight points to secure the win. However, one factor may have been overlooked in the teams' first meeting. Before the Lady Crusaders stepped onto the court to take on Emmanuel, they had already played 3 games, including an overtime game against Southern Wesleyan, the night before.
Head coach Jayne Arledge and her team are not making any excuses however as they look forward to the rematch with the Lions. “This is the biggest game of the year for us,” remarked Arledge. “This is what all the preseason work comes down to. This is what we have worked for all year and this one is for all the marbles. We are excited to play in this tonight.”
The last time the Crusaders played in the region final was two years ago against no other than Emmanuel College. North Greenville came out on the losing end of the match-up's 68-58 score. NGU will look to turn the tables tonight against Emmanuel. In the last three meetings between the two clubs, NGU has been on the losing end including a loss in the opening round of the 2009 NCCAA regional tournament.
As the saying goes “To the victor go the spoils” and if the Crusaders can win tonight they will receive an invitation to play in the NCCAA national tournament in Indiana in early March. Tip-off for tonight’s championship game is set for 7pm.
