Crusaders and Claflin win on Day 1 at Converse Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C.North Greenville University defeated Chowan University 87-74 in game 1 while Claflin University held off Brevard College 66-61 in game 2. Converse College and Columbia Union College did not play on the first day of competition in the All-Stars Independent Classic. Chowan and Brevard will do battle at 4:00 pm followed by Claflin taking on host Converse at 6:00 pm. The night cap features Columbia Union squaring off with North Greenville at 8:00 pm.

North Greenville vs. Chowan

North Greenville shot 59% from the floor in the first half to build a 19 point half time lead. Chowan struggled from beyond the arc, going 1 for 13 in the first half and 3 for 18 in the game from 3 point range.

Both teams had four players in double digits. North Greenville’s Eboni Davis scored a game high 24 points. The Crusaders picked up offensive support from Nikki Wood with 12 points and a team high 6 rebounds. Amanda Milner added 11 points while Samantha Frost recorded 10 points.

Chowan’s Lauryn Perry had a team high 20 points. Alicia McMorris, Rachel Wood, and AJ O’Bannion all had 12 points. Wood also had a game high 7 rebounds.

Brevard vs. Claflin

Claflin stormed out to a 26-6 lead to open the game. The Pantherettes would take an impressive 11 point lead in to the locker room. Claflin would extend that lead to 19 points with 13 minutes to play. But Brevard would come battling back going on a 25-6 run to tie the game at 56-56. However, the lead would be short lived as Claflin would hit a three to take the lead back. The Pantherettes would hold the lead for the remainder of the game and claim a 66-61 victory.

Claflin had four players reach double digits in scoring. Jayshaun Bailey led all scorers with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Latoya Savage added 14 while Shontavia Bladen recorded 11 points. Ashley Sorrell-Gibson chipped in with 10 points.

Brevard’s Holly Krogman had a team high 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Samantha Winn recorded a double-double on the evening with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The All-Stars Independent Classic actions begins at 4:00 pm tomorrow afternoon at the Tom and Tracy Hannah Gym on the campus of Converse College.
