Spartans down Crusaders 78-49

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Ebony Johnson recorded a double-double with career-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds in just 18 minutes of play and USC Upstate played a tremendous first half as the Spartans took a 78-49 victory over North Greenville Saturday afternoon at the Hodge Center.

USC Upstate improves to 4-4 on the year and hosts Presbyterian next Sunday afternoon at 2:00. North Greenville falls to 4-5 on the year and travels to Coker Monday evening for a 6:00 p.m. start.

Danielle Edwards converted a layup with 15:42 to play to give USC Upstate a 9-8 lead and the Spartans never trailed again. The basket started a 17-6 run that gave the Spartans a 10-point lead, 24-14, with 9:47 to play. After North Greenville cut the lead to seven, 30-23, with 6:37 to play in the half, Upstate closed out the half with an 18-4 run to open a 48-27 lead.

Kianna Smith and Edwards sparked the Spartans in the first half, finishing the first 20 minutes with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Spartans shot nearly 48 percent from the field in the half and had 17 offensive rebounds for 11 second chance points.

Upstate maintained a large lead in the second half with the advantage never falling below 21 points. The Spartans pushed the lead to 36 points before settling for the 29-point win.

Upstate finished the game shooting 40 percent from the floor and held North Greenville to 32 percent shooting. The Spartans crushed the Crusaders on the boards, out-rebounding North Greenville, 62-39. Upstate tallied 30 offensive rebounds and scored 22 second chance points. North Greenville had just two second chance points in the game.

Edwards finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Thompson added 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Smith added 14 points and six steals. Ketorria Smith had a solid game with eight points, eight boards, and two blocked shots.

Debbie Wyatt led North Greenville with eight points, while Audrey Toscano added seven in the loss.

The Crusaders will travel to Coker College Monday evening to play the Cobras in the first half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
