SPARTANBURG, SC- It took a 105 points and two overtime periods, but Converse College finally knocked of North Greenville 105-104 Tuesday night in NCAA Division II women's basketball action. Six Crusaders scored in double-figures, led by Amanda Milner (York, SC) who scored 15 points. Carla Kantara led all scorers with 27 points for the All-Stars.
The Crusaders found themselves in a big hole early. With just over nine minutes remaining in the first half, Converse held a 30-10 advantage. North Greenville, however, refused to stay down. Debbie Wyatt (Goose Creek, SC) scored eight points to lead a Crusader rally. North Greenville outscored Converse 29-14 over the last nine minutes of the first half to pull within five points at the break.
North Greenville out scored Converse in the second half thanks to the scoring of Audrey Toscano (Concord, NC), who scored nine second-half points, and Robin Warner (Greenville, SC), who brought in eight in the second half. With less than two minutes to play, the Crusaders held an 86-82 lead, but Lauren Mueller scored four points in the last minute and a half to tie the ballgame and force overtime.
In the first overtime period, North Greenville again held a four-point advantage with time running short. Then, Carla Kantara hit a jumper and Blake Hallman drained two free throws to force a second overtime period.
The second overtime period proved to be just as close and hard-fought, but in the end, critical turnovers cost the Crusaders and Converse won 105-104.
Amber Bramlett (Concord, NC) scored 14 points for North Greenville, while Toscano ended up with 13 points. Sarah Giles (Clover, SC) and Allison Robinson (Beaufort, SC) each scored 12 points, and Amber Rector (Wellford, SC) and Wyatt scored 10 points apiece.
North Greenville falls to 14-11. The Crusaders will return to action Friday night as they travel to Montreat College. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
