Lady Crusaders fall at Lander
Amber Rector scores 23 points in 91-87 loss

GREENWOOD----Shatora Irby led five Lander double-figure scorers with 30 points, pacing the Lady Bearcats past North Greenville 91-87 in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday at Horne Arena.

Rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit, Lander (4-6) scored a season-high in points and ended a four-game losing streak. The Crusaders fell to 5-5.

Irby fell one assist shy of a triple-double. The guard also had a game-high 11 rebounds and nine assists. Irby was three points shy of her career-high of 33 points achieved earlier this season at UNC Pembroke.

Jennifer Hukill added 17 points for the Lady Bearcats, Lashaundra Dubose had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists; Tara Nyikavaranda had 12 points and nine rebounds; and Shaquanta Glaze added 11 points.

Amber Rector led North Greenville with 23 points, Audrey Toscano had 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds; Sarah Giles had 16 points, and Debbie Wyatt 10 points.

Lander opened the second half with an 11-2 spurt to get back into the game. Hukill's 3-pointer pulled the Lady Bearcats within 46-45 with
16:20 left. Irby's 3-pointer tied the game at 50 with 14:25 to go, forcing North Greenville to surrender its first lead since it was 11-11.

After Rector's two driving lay-ups gave the Crusaders a 60-56 edge, Lander got hot. Glaze tied the game at 60, and Irby hit a reverse lay-up, was fouled, and converted a three-point play to give the Lady Bearcats their first lead of the game since 2-0, making it 63-60 with
9:23 to go.

Wyatt gave
North Greenville its last lead at 66-64 at the 8:10 mark. Glaze hit a 3-pointer, Bobbie Jo Grooms made two free throws, and Irby scored to give Lander seven unanswered points and a 71-66 lead.

Irby scored eight points to extend Lander's lead, then Hukill hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bearcats their largest advantage of the game at 88-77 with approximately two minutes to go.

Giles gave
North Greenville the lead when she hit a 3-pointer to break an 11-all tie with 15 minutes left in the first half. The Crusaders stayed on top for the rest of the first half. But the Lady Bearcats kept the game close with Hukill's 3-pointer pulling them within 21-19 at the 11:50 mark.

Dubose's lay-up closed Lander within 26-24 with
8:25 to go. But Rector and Giles hit 3-pointers and Robin Warner converted a three-point play, highlighting a 13-4 run to extend North Greenville's lead to 39-28 with 3:17 left. The Crusaders led 44-34 at halftime on the strength of 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range and 15 Lander turnovers.

For the game, the Lady Bearcats shot 49 percent from the floor (35-for-71), 76 percent from the free-throw line (16-for-21), and 31 percent from 3-point range (5-for-16).
North Greenville shot 45 percent from the floor (35-for-78), 64 percent from the line (9-for-14), and 42 percent from behind the arc (8-for-19). Lander had 30 turnovers to North Greenville's 29. The Lady Bearcats had a 46-38 rebounding edge.
