Balanced attack leads Lady Crusaders to victory

TIGERVILLE, SC- This Thanksgiving season, the North Greenville women's basketball team can be thankful for each other. The Lady Crusaders put forth a total team effort to down the Piedmont Lions 75-60 Tuesday night in Hayes Gymnasium. Seven players were within three points of each other in total points. Sarah Giles, Amber Rector, and Michelle Dennis led the team with 10 points each, but Amber Bramlett and Robin Warner were not far behind with nine each.

The Lions kept the game close for the first ten minutes, but then the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run to go up 23-13 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. North Greenville was able to expand that lead to 33-22 by halftime. Piedmont, however, opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to pull within four just two minutes into the half. North Greenville absorbed the blow, but did not buckle. Sarah Giles hit a three-pointer to stop the bleeding and the Crusaders would allow the Lions to get close only once more. A layup by Sarah Lane pulled Piedmont to within one point with 12:57 left in the game, but Amber Rector hit a three-pointer to give the Crusaders a four-point cushion. North Greenville steadily pulled away and won the ballgame 75-60.

The story of the game was North Greenville's defense. The Crusaders applied steady pressure and forced Piedmont to turn the ball over 30 times. Eighteen of those turnovers were in the second half. North Greenville converted those turnovers into 31 points, compared to the 13 points Piedmont converted off Crusader turnovers.

"We were just ecstatic about the defensive intensity we showed tonight," said head coach Jayne Arledge. "We were able to get 16 steals which turned into some easy transition points. We have emphasized our defense throughout practice this fall and it won the game for us tonight."

"Tonight was a complete team effort," noted assistant coach Kevin Nicholls. "We had a balanced attack which is the key to our success."

The Lady Crusaders, who improve to 2-2, will take their balanced attack to Southern Wesleyan University on November 29th. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
