Delmar "DC" Carey joined the North Greenville University women's basketball staff as an assistant coach in October of 2020.
Carey, who played collegiately at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland, has coached at the collegiate, high school and AAU level for the past ten years.
"Delmar’s energy is the first thing that you notice when talking to him," said NGU women's basketball head coach Kelvin Long. "Delmar has been in many roles as a coach so he will fit in nicely with our program. Getting a coach with Delmar’s character and experience has been a coup for our program."
Carey has served as an men's assistant basketball coach at Tuskegee University, and his alma mater Bowie State University. Most recently Carey served as the girls Nike EYBL16U head coach for one of the nations top AAU programs, Team Takeover, since 2015 and has been the program's grassroots director since 2018.
With Team Takeover, Carey assisted with winning the program's first ever Nike Nationals championship in 2019. He has coached over 60 NCAA players for Team Takeover, including six who have earned McDonald's All-American honors: Kaila Charles (2016, Maryland, now in WNBA with Connecticut Sun), Amira Collins (2018, RS Sophomore-at Maryland), Jakia Brown-Turner (2019, Sophomore at N.C. State), Angel Reese (2020, Freshman at Maryland), Mir McLean (2020, Freshman at Uconn), Madison Scott (2018, Freshman at Ole Miss).Â
At the high school level, Carey served as the Athletic director and Head Girls basketball coach at the Whittle School & Studios in Washington, DC. With the school breaking ground in 2019, Carey was tasked to start the entire athletic program overseeing 11 sports. In his first year as the girls basketball coach, Carey led the team to a 14-3 record.
Prior to AAU and high school, Carey started his coaching career as an men's assistant coach at his alma mater Bowie State University from 2010-2014. During his time as a collegiate coach, Carey developed over 10 athletes to play at the professional level. Carey also helped lead the Bowie State Bulldogs to two NCAA tournaments (2011,2013) and the teams first CIAA championship (2013) in over 10 years. Carey also had a stop at Tuskegee University as an assistant coach where he helped lead the tigers to a 15-13 record.
Carey made the transition to coaching after two seasons (2008-2010) as a Bowie State Bulldogs player. As a two year starter and team captain, Carey led his team to a northern division regular season championship. Carey was also a recipient of the Lowe's Senior Class award for his achievements on and off the court.
He graduated with honors earning a bachelor's degree in communications. He has a daughter, Jordan.
