Crusaders fall to King in championship series

Burlington – North Greenville’s season came to a possible end on Saturday after dropping a pair of games to King University in the Conference Carolinas tournament championship series.

The Basics

  • Game One: Crusaders – 2 / Tornado – 15
  • Game Two: Crusaders – 0 / Tornado – 7
  • Records: North Greenville 32 – 15 / King 33 – 20
  • Location: Springwood Park (Burlington, North Carolina)

How it Happened (Game One)

  • Sunday got off to an inauspicious start for the Crusaders as they quickly found themselves in an early hole.
  • The Tornado scored five runs in the first inning, all of which were unearned. The Tornado took advantage of three NGU errors and uncharacteristic walks by Amanda Coffrin to take the lead.
  • The Tornado scored a run in every inning but the fourth including an eight-run third frame to earn the game one win.
  • The Crusaders tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth on RBI singles from Brooklyn Stone and Taylor Koon.

Inside the North Greenville Box Score

  • Brooklyn Stone finished 2 for 2 with an RBI for NGU while Celsea Rivers was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
  • Ashton Withers was 1 for 2 with a run while Hannah Gravely and Jaelin Griffin also added a hit.
  • Coffrin took the loss in game one, never making it out of the first inning as MacKenzie Dyson came in for the Crusaders with just one out.

How it Happened (Game Two)

  • Sunday proved to be anything but ideal for the Crusaders as King carried over its momentum.
  • The game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Tornado broke through for three runs on a pair of hits.
  • NGU had few answers in the way of offense in game two, finishing with just three hits as a team.
  • The Crusaders got one hit in the fourth but left a runner on base. The seventh inning looked promising as the Crusaders got two on base but failed to score the runs.
  • King added four more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 7 – 0.

Inside the North Greenville Box Score

  • Ashton Withers, Taylor Koon, and Grace DeBoer all finished 1 for 3 for the Crusaders in the second game.
  • Jaelin Griffin pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering six earned runs on five hits. She struck out six batters.

  • The Crusaders will hope for an at-large bid to the 2018 NCAA softball tournament.
