HIGH POINT, N.C.- The North Greenville softball team has been picked second in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll, released by the conference office today. The Crusaders finished 31-17 in the regular season with a 17-5 mark in league play, earning them the third seed in the Conference Carolina Tournament. After going undefeated in the tournament, NGU faced 6th nationally ranked Pfeiffer in the championship game, defeating them 4-0 to capture North Greenville's first ever Conference Carolinas Softball Championship.
The All-Conference Carolinas pitching duo of Amanda Coffrin and Brooklyn Fort will be a major factor in NGU repeating as Conference champs. Coffrin finished the season ranked first in the conference in games started, complete games, wins, shutouts, innings pitched, and strikeouts. She was also second in an ERA of 1.56. Coffrin was named to 2017 NCAA D2CCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, Conference Carolinas Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and earned Conference Carolinas All-Conference First Team. Fort finished the season 17-7 with four shoutouts and an ERA of 2.00 while being named to the Conference Carolinas All-Conference Second Team.
Also named to the Players to Watch list was junior, outfielder Kate Lee. Lee saw action in 55 games with 167 at-bats for the Crusaders last year. She finished the season with 45 hits, 12 doubles, 3 home runs, 25 RBIs, .269 batting average, and .395 slugging percentage.
North Greenville will open up the season with a six-game homestand starting on February 7th at 1 P.M. as they host Wingate University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Crusaders and the Bulldogs split in last year matches, with the Crusaders winning game one 2-1 in nine innings, but then fell 4-1 in the second game of the day.
