Tigerville, S.C. - North Greenville split games in a non-conference matchup against Milligan on Saturday improving to 11-9 on the season.
Game 1 - NGU - 2 Milligan - 0
North Greenville had a late surge of runs to take game one 2-0.
Game one was very defensive with the first run of the game coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. North Greenville looked like they were going to get on the board in the bottom of the second when Kaitlyn Wagers doubled down the first base line to put herself in scoring position. After an error on a throw to first Kaitlyn made her way to third but a fielder’s choice play at third would end the inning.
After several scoreless innings, Shayna Finley would make her way to third base after a single of her own and an error at third. Morgan Herlong would fly out to right field and Finley would tag up and score the first run of the game for the Crusaders. Grace DeBoer was next up to bat with Christie Riley on second and a hard hit ball to deep left field would send Riley to the plate giving North Greenville a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning.
Milligan could not get the bats rolling in the top of the seventh and the Crusaders would come out on top in game one.
Game 2 - NGU - 4 Milligan - 5
Milligan would find a way to win game two in dramatic fashion, scoring five in the final two innings, to defeat the Crusaders.
NGU got on the board first in game two after Grace DeBoer worked her way around to third base and tagged up on a fly ball in foul territory from Kate Lee to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead going into the third inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Brooke Wade found her way to first after a misplayed ground ball and would steal second to set herself up in scoring position. Shayna Finley grounded out which resulted in Wade moving over to third base. Celsea Rivers made her way to first and stole second putting base runners on second and third with Megan Johnson at the plate. A wild pitch would allow Wade to steal successfully giving North Greenville a 2-0 lead. Johnson would end up getting thrown out at first but the hit allowed Rivers to score giving the Crusaders a 3-0 lead over the Buffaloes going into the fourth.
Brooke Wade would start off the bottom of the fifth with a single to the shortstop. Wade would steal all the way to third to set herself up in a position to score. Celsea Rivers came up to the plate and laid down a bunt which allowed Wade to score again but Rivers would get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
Milligan would begin to battle back in the top of the sixth when Madison Grindstaff walked to begin the inning. Jaclyn Jenkins would make it on base after a wild throw to second putting two runners on. After both being moved over a base, Grindstaff would score on a line drive up the middle giving Milligan their first run of the day. Jenkins would also score off a double from Kacie Skeen cutting the lead to 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
After holding North Greenville scoreless in the sixth, Milligan would find great success hitting the ball with Kelsey Linn leading off the inning with a ground rule double. With a walk putting Jenna Gilbert on base, a double to left field from Grindstaff would allow pinch runner Caitlyn Macemore to score moving Gilbert to third. Gilbert would go on to score with a single from Cayley Shoemaker tying the game up at four. With bases loaded, Shoemaker got a great jump on an infield hit to score giving Milligan the lead.
North Greenville would go three up three down in the bottom of the seventh to drop game two to Milligan 5-4.
The Crusaders will travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday March 1, 2017 to take on the Queens University of Charlotte Royals.
