Wilson, N.C. -- North Greenville softball dropped both games of a double header to Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, NC.
Game one saw the Crusaders give away a 2-0 lead before tying the game in the top of the seventh, only to have Mount Olive hit a walk-off winner.
Mount Olive walked in the first Crusader run of the game after a string of hits loaded the bases for North Greenville. The second run came via a fielder’s choice and the Crusaders almost added a third before Grace DeBoer was thrown out at the plate.
The Trojans got a run back in bottom of the second and then took the lead in the bottom of the third after two RBI-singles.
Down 3-2 headed into the final frame, the Crusaders got one run across to extend the game into the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Willingham’s home run tied the game before Mount Olive won on a walk off double, taking the conference victory by a score of 4-3.
Kayla McCarson took the loss for the Crusaders, taking her record to 0-5 on the season.
Game two saw a back and forth affair turn ugly after two big innings by the Trojans.
The Crusaders opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Shayna Finley notched an RBI single.
Mount Olive got one run across in the first and then three across in the second to take the 4-1 lead after two innings. The Crusaders got one back, however, as Jordan Farmer doubled home Celsea Rivers, who had singled earlier in the inning, taking the score to 4-2.
North Greenville took the lead in the fourth as pitcher Carson O’Donald helped her own cause with a three run homerun to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Crusaders.
The Trojans got three runs back in the bottom half of the inning, however, and then added four more in the fifth inning to take the lead 11-5. The Crusaders couldn’t get any more runs across and Mount Olive earned its second win of the day.
O’Donald took the loss from the circle, taking her record to 8-7 on the year. Farmer and Rivers paced the Crusader offense with two hits apiece, while O’Donald’s three RBI’s led the team in game two.
The loss takes North Greenville to 16-19 on the year and 3-9 in Conference Carolinas play. The team returns to action on Tuesday, April 12th for a double header with Southern Wesleyan University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the athletic facility here at North Greenville University.
