GRAY'S TWO RUN SINGLE CARRIES NGU TO DOUBLE-HEADER SPLIT WITH TROJANS

Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville Softball Team picked up a double-header split with Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 loss in nine innings in game one and a 6-5 win in game two.

The Trojans got the help of three unearned runs in the first game, as they took the two game series opener. Mount Olive took the lead 1-0 after the third inning and extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth. North Greenville evened the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning after Shayna Finley slammed a two run homer to right center field scoring NGU's first runs of the game.

The game would be sent into extras after the two squads traded one run seventh frames. An RBI double by the Trojans and a sacrifice fly from Tori Freedman for NGU would make the score 3-3 as the seventh came to a close. Mount Olive would strand two runners in its half of the final regulation inning while the Crusaders left one on base.

UMO would go on to load the bases in the eighth inning with one out but a close play at the plate and a ground out to second would end the threat. NGU would have its chance in the bottom half of the eighth with Sarah Armstrong on third base with one out. The Trojans would do their best damage control however and induce a pop out and a ground out to send the game into the ninth.

The Trojans would score the first runs of the bonus innings in the ninth a double and single would produce two runs as UMO took a 5-3 lead. North Greenville would load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but a home to first double-play would leave the Crusaders with one out to work with. Freshmen Haley Gray would line a base hit into shallow right field to score a run, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Morgan Roach and Sarah Armstrong led NGU in the hit column as Roach was 3-4 while Armstrong finished 2-3. Shayna Finley led NGU with two RBI after her two run homer and was 1-3 overall.

Game Two Box Score

North Greenville took a 2-0 lead in game two after Shayna Finley's two run double in the second inning scoring Sarah Armstrong and Greer Killman. The Trojans sliced the two run deficit to one run in the third on an RBI single.

The Crusaders would take a 3-1 in the fourth inning after a Tori Freedman solo homerun, but a big sixth inning from the Trojans would give them their first lead of the game. Mount Olive scored four runs on three hits during the top of the inning while also using two NGU errors. The Trojans stranded one during the frame but lead 5-3 as the two teams headed to the final inning and a half.

North Greenville responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Crusaders pulled to within one of the Trojans with a wild pitch as Brittan Kimbrough scored to cut the Mount Olive advantage to 5-4. North Greenville would win the game on the single of Haley Gray, who once again came through in a big spot for the Crusaders. Gray's two out single would score Michelle Brown and Shayna Finley to give the Crusaders the 6-5 lead.

NGU reliever Christene Phillips would close the door on the Trojans in the top of the seventh, picking up the final out after a single to give NGU the win. Tori Freedman was 2-3 with an RBI in game two for NGU while Shayna Finley was 2-4 with a run and two RBI. Haley Gray was 1-3 with two RBI whil Greer KIllman and Brittan Kimbrough were both 1-1 with a run scored. Gray's three RBI on Saturday were the first of her college career.
