Tigerville, S.C.—North Greenville improved to 2-0 in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon taking a two game set over Barton College 3-0 and 7-1 in spring break softball action.
Game one remained scoreless until the Crusaders broke through for three runs in the fifth inning. Shayna Finley picked up the first RBI of the day with a single to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Tori Freedman collected two RBI on a bases loaded knock that scored Jordan Farmer and Cassi Carpenter extending the advantage to 3-0.
Cassi Carpenter would earn the win in the circle for NGU, pitching a complete game while allowing just one hit. Freedman finished the opener with one hit and two RBI while Finley was 1-2 with an RBI.
North Greenville would take early control of game two, scoring two runs out of the gate. Jordan Farmer's RBI double would give the Crusaders a 1-0 head start. Farmer would come around to score on the next at bat as Finley would plate the run on her second base hit of the day.
Barton plated its first run of the day in the top of the second as the NGU's defense committed three errors. Starter Sarah Armstrong overcame the defensive miscues however, working out of the jam, stranding two Bulldog runners as the score stood at 2-1.
The Crusaders would head into the fourth inning with a 3-1 advantage before breaking the game wide open. A three run frame made the score 6-1 in favor of NGU as the Crusaders inched closer to the sweep. Carpenter would earn two RBI in the frame while Farmer would drive in her second RBI of the day.
Farmer would pickup a third RBI in the sixth inning to extend North Greenville's lead to six runs on a sacrifice fly. Reliever Anna Rogers would stomp out a Bulldog rally in the seventh inning picking up two of her five strikeouts to preserve the win for North Greenville.
Armstrong earned the win for NGU after giving up an unearned run in four innings of work. Farmer led NGU at the plate going 2-3 with three RBI while Christie Reilly was 2-3 with a run scored. Cassi Carpenter finished with a hit and two RBI while Shayna Finley also accounted for an RBI.
North Greenville is now 8-6 overall with the two conference wins on Saturday. The Crusaders will host a double-header with Mars Hill on March 12th starting at 1pm.
