Botetourt, Va. – The North Greenville University softball continued its postseason success with two victories on Friday afternoon in the NCCAA National Tournament, defeating #8 seed Geneva College 3-1 and #2 seed Simpson University 2-1.
In the first game of the afternoon, the #4 seed Lady Crusaders went up early after scoring a run in the second inning. However, Geneva quickly tied the game at one run apiece in the third inning.
North Greenville took the lead for good when Sarah Griffith had a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Laura Hopper got the start for the Lady Crusaders and pitched 4 1.3 innings, allowing only on run on four hits while striking out two batters. Taylor Roof picked up her second win of the tournament as she pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief while recording four strikeouts.
At the plate, Griffith led Lady Crusaders as she finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI. Roof was 1-for-2 in the game with a run scored, while Emily Campbell recorded an RBI.
In game two, the Lady Crusaders were down one run until a two-run fifth inning secured a spot in the National Championship game.
Down 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, North Greenville put together a two-out rally to score two runs and claim the win.
Kimberly Robertson began the rally with a two-out single and was followed by a Kansas Wofford walk. With two on and two out, Courtney Campbell doubled to left field, bringing Robertson home and tying the game at 1-1. After the double, Roof reached on a fielder’s choice and Wofford was able to score the game-winning run before the third out was made.
Roof picked up her third win in a row after pitching a complete game, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five, bringing her tournament total to 16 strikeouts in just three games.
Robertson led North Greenville on offense, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Wofford was 1-for-3 with a run scored. C. Campbell and Roof each finished the contest 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Tomorrow, May 14, North Greenville will play in the NCCAA World Series National Championship game at noon. The Lady Crusaders’ championship opponent will be decided at 10 a.m. as #1 seed Central Baptist takes on #2 seed Simpson University with the winner advancing to play the Lady Crusaders.
