Lady Crusaders earn spot in championship

Tigerville, S.C. – The Lady Crusader softball team began postseason on a high note, defeating Emmanuel College 4-1 and Palm Beach Atlantic University 9-7 in the first round of the NCCAA South Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon.


North Greenville used a stellar all-around performance by Taylor Roof to defeat the Lady Lions of Emmanuel College 4-1 in their first game of the day.


Roof was given the start on the mound and picked up her ninth win of the season after pitching four innings, allowing only one run on one hit while recording six strikeouts. Courtney Campbell picked up her second save of the season after pitching three innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters.


The Lady Crusader offense was led by Roof who finished the day 1-for-2 with a homerun, two RBI and a run scored. Emily Campbell and Laura Hopper each recorded an RBI of their own, while Marielena Santos finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored.


In game two, the Lady Crusaders used two big innings to down the Lady Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic 9-7.


Palm Beach Atlantic earned a four-run advantage before North Greenville scored three runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth to secure a spot in the championship game.
On the mound, Roof got the start once again and went 2 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on four hits. Hopper earned her fifth win of the season after pitching 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four batters.


At the plate, the Lady Crusaders were on fire totaling 12 hits, four of which went for extra bases. Leading the way at the plate was Roof who finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Kansas Wofford also finished the game 3-for-4 with a homerun, three runs scored and an RBI, while Karli Taylor had a strong game as she went 1-for-2 at the plate with a homerun and two RBI.


With the two victories the Lady Crusaders assured themselves a spot in the NCCAA South Regional Championship game on Saturday, May 7. North Greenville’s opponent in the championship will be decided after Emmanuel and Palm Beach Atlantic play each other in an elimination game at 10 a.m. The championship game is set to begin at noon.
