Due West, S.C. – The Lady Crusader softball team was denied its first victory of the season after dropping a double header to Erskine College 6-5 and 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
“In the first game we hit the ball well but we couldn’t execute a few defensive plays that came back to hurt us,” said head coach Sarah Hall. “We just didn’t have support at the end of the game. In the second game we just couldn’t hit the ball.”
In game one North Greenville led 5-2 until a four-run sixth inning by the Lady Flying Fleet gave the Lady Crusaders the one-run loss.
Laura Hopper pitched a game one, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up five runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. Taylor Roof picked up the loss as she pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up one run on two hits.
At the plate in the first game the Lady Crusaders were led by Courtney Campbell and Roof, who each had a home run in the contest. Campbell finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Roof was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Kimberly Robertson also had a strong game one, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two, Erskine pitcher Heather Richey threw a no-hitter as the Lady Crusaders were unable to make the right adjustments and make any positive moves at the plate.
Campbell got her first start of the season in game two and pitched a complete game, giving five runs on seven hits and one strikeout.
North Greenville (0-4) will look to gain its first victory of the season as it hosts in-state rival Southern Wesleyan University tomorrow in a double header beginning at 2 p.m. in Tigerville.
