TIgerville, S.C.—The Lady Crusaders came up short in their quest for a national title today losing their first game to Palm Beach Atlantic 4-2. The Crusaders followed the loss up with a win over Truett McConnell 12-4 in an elimination game. NGU’s season officially ended with a 3-1 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic.
For the tournament, the Crusaders finished 2-2 with two wins over Truett McConnell and two losses to Palm Beach Atlantic. For the tournament, North Greenville was led by Karli Taylor who was a combined 6-11 with a run scored and two RBI’s. Taylor produced a hit in all four games.
Taylor Roof also had a solid tournament from the plate going 5-11 with two runs and four RBI’s. Roof also hit a homerun in game one. Jessica Turner was 4-10 with four runs scored and an RBI for the Lady Crusaders.
North Greenville employed four different pitchers in the two day tournament. Kristyn Smith led the hurlers pitching 8.3 total innings giving up seven runs on eight hits and striking out 11 batters. Laura Hopper was next in line with 5.3 innings pitched giving up two runs on three hits. Hopper struck out eight. Taylor Roof and Courtney Campbell pitched four innings a piece. Roof allowed four runs on six hits and struck out one while Campbell pitch four shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out three batters.
The Crusaders finished their first season under head Coach Sarah Hall with a 25-21 record overall with a 23-19 regular season mark. North Greenville finished the season with a .303 batting average, a .46 point improvement from the teams 2009 average. Looking ahead to the 2011 season, Coach Hall will lose six seniors to graduation but still has many of her top performers returning including six players with a .300 batting average or better. The pitching staff will remain intact with strikeout leader and four year starter Kristyn Smith (143 Strikeouts in 105 innings pitched) returning for her senior year.
