Newberry Box Score Spartanburg, S.C.—The North Greenville softball team opened the second day of the Mid-South Classic on Saturday with a convincing 11-3 win over Lincoln Memorial beating the Railsplitters 11-3 but falling to Brevard 3-1 and Newberry 8-0.
The Crusaders offense reappeared during the first game of the day scoring 11 runs on 12 hits. Among the leaders were Hope Brewer who was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI and Courtney Campbell who was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Kimberly Robertson (2) and Allison Bailey (1) also picked up RBI’s for NGU. Tia LaFreniere was 3-3 at the plate during the six inning game and Sarah Griffith was 1-1 with an RBI.
Starting pitcher in game one for NGU was freshman Laura Hopper who pitched three innings giving up three runs on five hits. Kimberly Robertson came on in relief for North Greenville pitching two innings holding the Railsplitters scoreless giving up two hits and striking out three batters.
The Crusaders were not as successful in the final game of the tournament. Newberry’s Felicia Taylor was able to hold North Greenville to one hit holding NGU scoreless for the seven inning game. The hit for NGU came from senior Hope Brewer who tripled in the bottom of the first inning.
Pitching for North Greenville was Kristyn Smith who pitched three innings giving up six runs on four hits. Smith struck out six batters and walked four. Taylor Roof came on in relief for the Crusaders in the fourth inning giving up two runs on two hits allowing one walk and striking out five.
The Crusaders also lost to Brevard College 3-1 during the second game on Saturday.
