CRUSADERS DROP TWO GAMES TO SOLID WIINGATE TEAM

Game Two Box Wingate, S.C.—The North Greenville women’s softball (8-4) team lost both games of a double header today against South Atlantic Conference member Wingate University (15-1) falling 2-1 in extra innings in the first game and losing 3-0 in the second game.

Freshman Laura Hopper (0-1) started the first game for NGU pitching a solid 7.2 innings giving two runs (one earned run) on eight hits and striking out 10 batters. Offensively the Crusaders struggled against Wingate pitching charting only four hits and scoring one run.

The lone NGU run came in the second inning which tied the game after the Bulldogs took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first. NGU’s lone RBI came off of the bat of Tia LaFreniere who was 1-3. Other hitters for North Greenville were Allison Bailey (1-4), Jessica Turner (1-3), and Karli Taylor (1-3) who scored the run for the Crusaders.
North Greenville had a chance to pull ahead in the top of eighth inning with a runner on third but the Crusaders were unable to score the go ahead run. Wingate would go on to score the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. The extra inning game was the second in two days for North Greenville.

Kristyn Smith (3-2) pitched the second game for North Greenville. Smith pitched six innings giving up three earned runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out two batters. Wingate struck early in the game once again scoring 2 runs in the bottom half of the first inning on four hits. The Bulldog’s third run came in the fourth inning.

North Greenville batters once again struggled with a very strong Wingate pitching staff. The Crusaders were shut out in the second game of the day and only registered five hits. Kansas Wofford (1-3), Kimberly Robertson (1-3), Hope Brewer (1-3), Allison Bailey (1-2), and Tia LaFreniere (1-3) all registered hits for NGU.
North Greenville will take six days to rest before taking on Mars Hill College on the road on March 3rd in a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2pm.
