Jan McDonald’s one season as the interim softball coach at North Greenville University isn’t over yet. The Crusaders extended their season for at least another week as they were selected to compete in the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) South Regional Tournament Saturday,
April 18 at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA near Athens.
The Crusaders, currently 16-16 overall, will take on host Emmanuel at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the first game.
The double elimination tournament also features Chowan College of North Carolina.
At stake Saturday is a berth in the NCCAA national finals May 7-9 at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Palm Beach, Fla.
NGU is led by Lindsay Eargle (SR Newberry, SC) who hits .330, Karli Taylor (.370 with 2 HR’s / FR Taylors, SC), and Allison Bailey (.300 with 2 HR’s and 4 doubles / JR Jefferson, SC). The Crusaders’ top pitcher is Kristyn Smith (SO Walhalla, SC) who has a 10-7 record with a 2.31 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 117 innings pitched. She also has four shutouts this year.
“We are delighted with the opportunity to go down to Emmanuel and compete for the regional title once again,” McDonald said. “The chance to keep playing and represent North Greenville University is a primary motivator for us. It’s especially nice for our seniors who get one more chance to compete as a Crusader.”
