Tigerville, S.C.- Despite the windy cold spring day in Tigerville the North Greenville Softball team took the field for a double header against the Montreat College Cavaliers. The Lady Crusaders looked to extend their 4 game win streak and sweep their third series in a row. Kristyn Smith started the first game for the Crusaders on
the mound and would soon find herself in a first game pitchers dual.
Smith was up to challenge as she would go on to strike out 10 batters on the day, giving up 2 hits and a walk. The runs for either team did not come until extra innings. The Cavaliers put two runs on the board in the top of the 8th off of a sacrifice bunt and a right field base hit.
The Crusaders tried to answer in the bottom half of the 8th but could only muster 1 run off of a Lauren Vick sacrifice bunt and a Krysta Laird single The Crusaders would lose the first game 2 to 1.
While no pitcher likes losing they very rarely have the chance to make up for the loss on the same day.
However Kristyn smith would get that rare chance. Smith started the second game looking to continue the success she had before the extra inning of the first game. She would receive the support of the offense in the second game as well. Smith would go on to pitch a 3 hit shutout giving up no runs on 3 hits with 6 strike outs giving her 16 strikeouts between the two games.
The Crusaders would lend support to Kristyn Smith’s cause beginning in the 4th inning Hope brewer rips a 2 out double into left field. Allison Bailey would pick up the RBI when she scored Brewer off of a single to left field. NGU would add some insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th. Bridget Watson lead the inning off with a double. Lindsey Eargle would plate Watson with a 2nd consecutive double. Hope Brewer kept the rally alive with a third consecutive double (Lindsey Eargle would be thrown out at home trying to score). Allison Bailey would score Brewer with yet another double to end the NGU scoring.
Leaders for NGU include Hope Brewer who went 2 for 3 scoring 2 runs, Lindsey Eargle who went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Allison Bailey who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s leading NGU to a 3 to 0 win in the second game. The Crusaders improve to 15 in 15 on the year. The team’s next home series is April 14 at 2 pm against Brevard College.
