NGU softball had two exciting wins today on the road against Milligan College. The Crusaders beat out Milligan with scores of 2-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second.
North Greenville battled hard in the first, going into the sixth inning still 0-0. Finally in the sixth the Crusaders “took advantage of their hits,” said Coach Jan MacDonald. Bridget Watson got on with a walk and was followed by Hope Brewer with an RBI double. Karli Taylor hit a single to score Brewer and Kristyn Smith closed out the game.
Smith got the win for the first game. She threw an impressive four-hit shutout, with a total of eight strikeouts. Defense played very well today also. They did their part to effectively squash Milligan’s efforts on all four hits and managed to keep their opponent from scoring a single run.
Brewer scored a homerun in the first inning to put NGU in the lead, 1-0. However, it was the fourth inning when the Crusaders put the game away, with singles from Lauren Vick and Watson, along with three errors by Milligan, to score four additional runs.
Taylor Roof was attributed the win and Dana Garcia came in as relief in the fifth to get the save. Both Roof and Garcia only gave up one hit and Garcia gave up Milligan’s only run.
The softball team is on the road again Saturday, March 4, to Greenville, Tenn. to take on Tusculum College at 1 p.m.
