NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College's comeback bid fell short as the Lady Indians were unable to overcome a 7-0 deficit, falling, 7-4, to North Greenville University in NCAA Division II softball action Saturday afternoon.
Newberry fell behind early as North Greenville scored three runs in the top of the second inning. The Crusaders loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. A walk and two fielder's choices drove in the three runs to put North Greenville up.
The Crusaders added a run in the top of the fourth when Christina Shin walked and was driven in by a two-out triple off the bat of Lindsey Eargle.
North Greenville scored its final three runs of the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, a sacrifice bunt and a hard groundball to the first baseman.
Down 7-0, Newberry got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Jesse Groves (Suwanee, Ga.) hit a double and was driven in by Richelle Mirabal (Tamp, Fla.). The Lady Indians were then able to load the bases but Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.) struck out and Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The Lady Indians refused to go away quietly though as they rallied again in the bottom of the seventh inning. Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, S.C.) hit a bunt single to first and Sara Powell (Ocean View Del.) reached on an error by the second baseman putting two runners on for Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.). Hammond came through with a double up the middle to score both Gatewood and Powell.
After a Groves sacrifice fly advanced Hammond to third, Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) hit a hard shot to centerfield but the Crusaders' Bridget Watson tracked the ball down for the second out. Hammond scored on the lineout to make the score 7-4. With two outs, Mirabal grounded out to the pitcher to end the rally and the game.
Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) took the loss for the Lady Indians after allowing five earned runs in four innings of work. The sophomore falls to 7-4 on the year.
Kristyn Smith picked up the win for North Greenville. The freshman went the full seven innings and allowed just two earned runs.
The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain.
