TIGERVILLE, SC—North Greenville University swept an afternoon doubleheader against Piedmont College Thursday afternoon at the NGU Softball Stadium. The Crusaders took the front end of the double-dip 4-3, while winning the nightcap 6-2. NGU improve to 6-13 on the season.
Game 1: NGU 4, PC 3
Kristyn Smith pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters and only giving up three hits, to pick up the win for the Crusaders. Lindsay Drevlow gave up seven hits and struck out three in the loss.
NGU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Allison Bailey hit a home run over the left field fence.
Hope Brewer scored on a Kayla Farmer sacrifice fly in the second inning to put the Crusaders up 2-0.
Bailey struck again in the fourth inning, crushing a home run that hit the top of the flag pole in dead centerfield.
Piedmont scored two runs in the fifth inning to make the score 3-2. Megan Thompson and Raley White scored on two Crusader errors.
The Lions tied the game in the top of the seventh inning as Laura Puckett scored on a fielder’s choice.
Tia Lafreniere led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. She advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Farmer, then advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. Christina Shin, then, singled Lafreniere home for the game winning run.
Game 2: NGU 6, PC 2
Piedmont opened up the first inning with hot bats. Megan Day hit a triple to start things off. Then, Lindsay Drevlow followed with a home run to give the Lions an early 2-0 lead.
Krista Yeoman then came in to pitch for the Crusaders and retired the side. Yeoman pitched four innings, striking out one and giving up three hits, in the win.
B.J. Cofer took the loss for the Lions.
NGU scored three runs in each of the first and second innings. In the first inning, Shin scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Eargle. Bailey scored on a fielder’s choice and Farmer scored on a single by Lafreniere.
In the second inning, Shin and Katie Eargle scored on a Lindsey Eargle single. Eargle then scored on a Bailey single to round out the scoring.
NGU returns to action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at home versus Brenau University.
