Softball splits doubleheader with SMC
Christina Shin led NGU with 4 hits in doubleheader

TIGERVILLE, SC--North Greenville University split an afternoon doubleheader with Spartanburg Methodist College Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers won the front end of the double-dip 72, while the Crusaders won the night-cap 3-2. North Greenville improves to 3-10 on the season, while SMC is now 10-6.

Game 1: SMC 7, NGU 2

Jen Lamonica gave up two runs on four hits in five and a third innings of work to pick up the win on the mound for the Pioneers, while Brittany Scoggins got the save. Krista Yeoman gave up seven runs on nine hits in the loss for the Crusaders.

SMC took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Bree Shirley scored from third base on a ground out to the shortstop.

NGU went ahead 2-1 in the third inning as Lindsey Eargle singled on Shealy Broome and Ashley Warlick.

The Pioneers scored three runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings to win 7-2.

Christina Shin led the Crusaders at the plate with two hits.

Game 2: NGU 3, SMC 2

Freshman Kristyn Smith pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on five hits, to pick up the win for the Crusaders. Scoggins gave up three runs on six hits in the loss for the Pioneers.

After four scoreless innings, SMC put up two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jamie Sky singled in Amber Hartley from third base. Whitney Wiles advanced to third base on the play, and then scored on a Crusader error in rightfield.

NGU answered in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Hope Brewer scored on a Pioneer error at shortstop to put the Crusaders on the scoreboard. Then, Bridget Watson singled in Jessica Turner and Broome.

Shin again batted 2-for-3 to lead NGU at the plate. Watson led the team with 2 RBI.

North Greenville returns to action Thursday afternoon at Milligan College at 2:00 p.m.
