MARS HILL, NC - The Mars Hill softball team swept a double-header from North Greenville University Monday afternoon at Ponder Park. The Lions won the first game 5-3 and then won the nightcap in five innings, 8-0. MHC improved to 22-3 overall while the Crusaders fell to 1-8 on the season.
Game 1: MHC 5, NGU 3
Mars Hill scored three runs in their first at-bat behind a two-RBI homerun from Natalie Haithcox (Asheboro, NC). The Crusaders tied the contest in the top of the second inning after Tia LaFreniere hit a three-run homer to center. MHC plated the game winning runs in the bottom half of that inning. Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, NC) doubled to right-center to drive in Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, NC) and Jenny Hoyt (Rose Hill, KS).
Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, NC) threw four innings to pick up the win (8-2). Paige Brantley (Raleigh, NC) threw the final three innings to earn her second save on the year. Seawell and Haithcox were both 1-2 at the plate with two RBI.
Game 2: MHC 8, NGU 0
Mars Hill defeated the Crusaders 8-0 in game two. The Lions came out of the gates strong scoring six runs in their first at-bat on five hits highlighted by a three-run homerun from Jade Bullins (Danbury, NC). MHC scored single runs in the second and third innings to make the final tally 8-0. Haithcox singled to right-center to plate Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, NC) in the third frame and then Hoyt singled to drive in Bullins in the fourth inning.
Huff went 3-3 with two runs scored while Haithcox was 2-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Bullins went 2-3 with three RBI and a homerun. Tara West (Urbana, OH) threw four innings to pick up the win (7-1) for MHC. She allowed just three hits and struck out six batters.
NGU will host Spartanburg Methodist College on Tuesday, March 11. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
