TIGERVILLE, SC--Mars Hill College spoiled North Greenville University's softball home opener Thursday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Crusaders. Mars Hill improves to 13-1 on the season, while North Greenville falls to 2-5. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was called after three innings due to rain.
Game 1: MHC 6, NGU 2
Natalie Haithcox went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the Lions. Haithcox hit a ground rule double in the fourth inning to bring home Kristina Osborn and Ashley Angell. Tara West picked up the win on the mound striking out three batters and allowing zero runs.
Tiara Mitchell homered in the second inning to give Mars Hill an early 1-0 lead. The Lions' also scored in the fifth inning as Haithcox scored on a wild pitch.
North Greenville scored two runs in the sixth inning. Krysta Laird reached first base on an third baseman's error, while Lindsey Eargle scored from third base. Yeoman advanced to third and then scored as the Lions caught Laird in a pickle between first and second base. Laird was tagged out by the SS Ashley Harber to end the inning.
Kristyn Smith took the loss on the mound for NGU.
Mars Hill led 7-1 after three innings when the game was called due to rain.
North Greenville will return to action Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
