Softball falls in 8th inning

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA—Palm Beach Atlantic scored two runs in the eighth inning to defeat North Greenville University 4-2 in the opening round of the NCCAA South Regional Tournament Friday at Emmanuel College.

Chelsea Gravini was placed on second base at the beginning of the eighth inning in accordance with the International Tiebreaker Rule. Gravini advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Candace Horton popped up to leftfield, but the ball was dropped and Gravini scored on the play to put PBA up by one run. Horton later scored on an error to make the score its final of 4-2.

Andrea Fugate pitched five innings, giving up only one hit and striking out ten in the win. Ashley Warlick took the loss for NGU, giving up six hits and striking out five in eight innings of work.

Rebecca Bolinger led PBA at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Horton had two RBI.

Amanda McElveen and Christina Shin had the only two hits for the Crusaders. Hope Brewer had one RBI for North Greenville.

The Crusaders held a 2-1 lead after the first inning. PBA tied the game 2-2 in the sixth, and scored the winning two runs in the eighth.

North Greenville will play the loser of the PBA-Emmanuel game at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
