Softball loses two to USC Upstate

TIGERVILLE, SC-- USC Upstate swept an afternoon doubleheader at North Greenville University Saturday. The Spartans took the first game 14-1 and the second 10-0, both in five innings. Upstate improves to 39-9 on the season, while North Greenville falls to 9-31.

GAME ONE: Upstate 14 NGU 1

Emily Jeffery pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 batters in five innings of work to pick up the win. Audrey Christmas pitched two innings, giving up five hits and three runs in the loss.

The Spartans spread 14 hits among seven batters. Vanesa Flores and Jamie Amerine each went 3-for-3. Amerine batted in four runs, including a solo home run, while Flores had two RBI. Ashleigh Beck drove in two runs, including a solo home run, on a 2-for-4 game.

Christina Shin broke up Jeffery’s no-hitter in the fourth inning for the Crusaders’ only hit. NGU’s lone run came in the second inning when Hope Brewer, who had reached on a walk, scored on an error.

The Spartans scored one run in the first inning, two in the second, four in the third, and seven in the fourth.

North Greenville made four errors, while Upstate only recorded one.

GAME TWO: Upstate 10 NGU 0

Jessica Jolly pitched a one-hitter, striking out five en route to the win. Ashley Warlick gave up eight hits and struck out two in four innings of work in the loss.

Flores again led the Spartans, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Katie Adams and Shay Slater each had two hits and two RBI.

Tia Lafrieniere had the lone hit for the Crusaders.

Upstate scored three runs in the first inning, five in the second, and one in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Each team recorded two errors.

NGU returns to action Monday as they travel to Clinton, SC to play Presbyterian College.
