Softball falls at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team completed a season sweep of North Greenville University by winning both games of Monday's non-conference doubleheader, 3-0 and 7-0.

Newberry brings its record to 25-16-1, while North Greenville falls to 7-25.

Game One: Newberry 3, North Greenville 0
Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) drove in all three Newberry runs, while the Lady Indians emerged unscathed from mutliple jams.

Ginna Dean (Willow Springs, N.C.) started the Newberry scoring by running out an infield single to lead off the bottom of the first. After a sacrifice bunt by Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.), Hammond hit a single to plate Dean and give Newberry the 1-0 advantage.

The Crusaders were able to put a total of 14 runners on base in seven innings, but Newberry forced North Greenville to strand 12 runners on base, as the Crusaders left the bases loaded twice.

Hammond added the insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, as she blasted her seventh homerun of the season to left field.

Christina Kirby (12-6, Delmar, Del.) started and picked up the victory for Newberry, striking out five while walking four and giving up four hits in five-plus innings. Stephanie Monette (2, Conway, S.C.) earned the save, striking out one and giving up one hit in two innings of work.

Katie Eargle (2-11) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on four hits, striking out two and walking one in six innings.

Game Two: Newberry 7, North Greenville 0
After an early Newberry run was erased due to Dean leaving third base early on a sacrifice fly, Jenny Raines (Blythewood, S.C.) led the second inning off with a walk. Stephanie Blazer (Greenville, S.C.) put runners on the corners with a double to the gap in left-center. Dean drove in Raines on an infield single. Blazer was able to score on a muffed throw after a Dean steal, giving Newberry a two-run lead after two.

Monette put the Crusaders down in order in the top of the third, and Newberry extended its lead in the bottom of the frame. Hammond led off with a single and scored on an extended series of NGU errors after a snap throw attempt. Five consecutive Lady Indians reached base after that, with one out on a fielder's choice. But with bases loaded, Newberry successfully executed the suicide squeeze, as Raines scored on an Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) bunt single to give Newberry a 4-0 jump.

Newberry scored its final runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Hammond, Kirby and Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) hit back-to-back-to-back doubles. After Powell reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Raines, Tiffany Pigage (Lexington, S.C.) walked and was replaced on the bases by Jessica Reid (Walhalla, S.C.). The Lady Indians put the final run on the board as Powell and Reid performed a double steal, plating Powell for the seventh run.

North Greenville had one scoring opportunity in the game, as a Tia LaFrieniere single to right field could have scored Allison Bailey, but a bullet of a throw from Blazer to Pigage put Bailey out at the plate.

Monette (11-8) picked up her fourth shutout of the season, giving up four hits in seven innings while striking out one and walking two.

Crusader starter Ashley Warlick (3-12) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs - two earned - in 3-1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and three walks and striking out one.
