Crusader softball splits with Newberry
Lester hit two home runs in Game One

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Junior pitcher Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) (1-3) struck out nine and gave up just two hits in Newberry's game two win over North Greenville University, 4-0, this afternoon at the Newberry Softball Field. The win is Kirby's first of the season. Freshman hurler McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) (2-2) contributed nine strike-outs in game one, but the Lady Indians fell 9-5. Newberry improves to 3-6 on the year, while North Greenville moves to 1-3.

The Lady Indians jumped ahead early in game two, scoring a run in the first inning and three in the third. Senior Ashleigh Anderson (Barnwell, S.C.) started the third inning rally with a bunt single and junior Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) reached on an error, giving Newberry two runners in scoring position. Shortstop Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) produced a double to left field, scoring both runs, and scored herself thanks to a Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) RBI.

Kirby earned the win in the complete game performance, while Amy Krainas (Greenville, S.C.) picked up the loss.

In game one, Newberry led for most of the game until the Crusaders had back-to-back four-run innings in the sixth and seventh. Lynch hit a one-run double in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Indians up 4-1 heading into the sixth. North Greenville responded with a three-run blast from Holly Lester (Gadson, S.C.) in the top of the sixth, her second home run of the game.

Newberry tied the game at five in their half of the sixth after an RBI double from Lynch, but North Greenville tacked on four more runs in the seventh for the win. The Lady Indians stranded 11 runners on the game, eight in the last four innings. Phillips was charged with the loss for Newberry, despite her nine strike outs and three hits allowed. Krainas got the win for North Greenville.

Up next for Newberry is a home doubleheader with Lander University on February 20. Game one action is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. North Greenville travels to USC Upstate for a doubleheader on February 21 at 2 p.m.
