The North Greenville University softball team won 2 out of three games over the weekend in a tournament held at Byrnes High School. The Crusaders played the Florence Flames and the Thundercats, two 18 and under traveling teams. NGU lost to the Flames by a score of 4-2, but defeated the Thundercats twice by scores of 5-2 and 6-2.
Amy Krainas finished the day 1-1 while striking out 13 in two complete games. Ashley Warlick pitched the other game, winning a 5-2 decision and striking out seven. The Crusader pitching staff only allowed one walk in three games.
Holly Lester hit an opposite field in-the-park home run in her first at-bat of the season. Jordan Brock had two doubles on the day, and Krista Yeoman had one double.
"We played well defensively," said head coach Buster Sturkie. "We didn't play errorless, but we were close." Sturkie also noted, "Our freshmen came on strong and gave us good support, which is a good way to start the season. I am excited."
Crusader softball will next compete October 15th in a doubleheader versus the Thundercats beginning at 11:00 a.m. An alumni softball game will be held at 9:30 a.m. as part of North Greenville's homecoming festivities.
