Tigerville – NGU football added another piece to its coaching staff on Monday with the addition of
Carroll McCray as the Assistant Head Coach and offensive line.
McCray returns to Tigerville having headed the program in 2012, leading the Crusaders to a 5-6 record. NGU won five of its last six games to round out the year. The move to Tigerville was a brief one for McCray who took the head coaching spot at his Alma Mater, Gardner Webb in 2013.
Carroll McCray's efforts at Gardner Webb did not go un-noticed. The Monroe, North Carolina native led the Runnin' Bulldogs to five wins over some of the top teams in the Football Championship Series (FCS), a program which had just two wins over top-25 opponents in previous seasons. In his first season at the helm, McCray led the Bulldogs to a 3-1 record over national ranked squads en route to a 7-5 record, the best record for the program in more than 10-years.
Prior to his time at North Greenville and Gardner Webb,
Carroll McCray spent time at Mercer where he was an associate head coach and as the head coach at Austin Peay. He also worked at Furman, Mississippi State, Samford, South Carolina, and Appalachian State as an assistant coach. He got his start in coaching under Sparky Woods at App. State.
During his time at the University of South Carolina, McCray worked with the Gamecocks' offensive line, tight-ends, and H-backs, tutoring five NFL draft picks including Ernest Dye who was selected 18
th overall in 1993.
He spent his next seven years at Samford University (1994-2000) where he helped the Bulldogs to five winning seasons, working with the offensive line, a unit which led a rushing attack that put up 3,439-yards and 19 touchdowns. McCray also worked with the offensive line at Furman University where he developed five All-SoCon performers, two of which signed free agent contracts with NFL franchises.
Carroll McCray graduated from Gardner Webb in 1983 and was a three-year Letterman on the Runnin' Bulldogs offensive line. He has a wife Angel and two children, Trey, former NGU football coach, and Meredith.
