NGU Falls Just Short of Comeback Against Belmont Abbey

Box Score Tigerville, SC - North Greenville nearly completed a miraculous comeback tonight at Hayes Gymnasium, but ultimately fell to the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College with a final score of 3-2. NGU dropped the first two sets before coming back to take sets three and four. The two teams were neck and neck throughout the final set, but BAC would go on to narrowly clinch the set to escape Tigerville with the win. Jackson Gilbert led with 18 kills.

Recap
  • After a fairly even start to the match, Belmont Abbey would put together the first run of the match, scoring four out of five to take a 10-6 lead. NGU would come right back with of four out of five run of their own including service aces by Diego Rosich and Brandon Baker. BAC would hang on to a narrow lead until North Greenville was able to tie the set up at 22-22. After four additional ties, Belmont Abbey would string together two points to take the opening set 28-26.
  • The second set saw BAC get out to another lead early on. North Greenville would once again fight right back to tie the set at 6-6. Two additional ties would follow, but BAC would take a lead again and never look back. NGU would put together a 6-3 run later in the set, but would drop it 25-20.
  • Set three would begin with another tight battle between the two teams. North Greenville would post a 4-1 run including a kill by Brandon Baker to take a 9-7 lead. Belmont Abbey would come back and even take a three point lead, but a 5-0 run by NGU would prove to be enough to hang on, winning set three 25-22.
  • The fourth set began as a tight one, but North Greenville would take the lead and increase it throughout. NGU would end the set with a dominating 10-2 run that included three kills by Mark Autry to take the set 25-14 to force a fifth set.
  • In the final set, the two teams were initially unable to pull away from the other, with neither team leading by more than a point until a 4-1 run by NGU to take a 10-8 lead. BAC would respond with the same run to take their own two point lead. Tied 14-14, an attack error and a service error by North Greenville allowed Belmont Abbey to escape with a 16-14 set win to take the match.
Individual
  • Jackson Gilbert led the way with 18 kills, 41 total attacks, and 7 digs.
  • Diego Rosich posted 14 kills and 29 total attacks. He led the team with 3 service aces.
  • Brandon Baker also hit double digits in kills with 10. He also recorded 3 digs, 3 block assists, and a service ace.
