NGU Athletics Resumes With Men's Volleyball Victory Over Tusculum

Box Score Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders opened up the Spring 2020 season with a win over the Pioneers of Tusculum University Thursday night at Hayes Gymnasium. NGU took the opening set with relative ease. After a bit of a struggle in the 2nd set, the Crusaders fought back to win a close 3rd set, then ended the match with a dominant 4th set. Jackson Gilbert picked up where he left off last season, leading the way with 13 kills.

How it Happened
  • NGU was able to get going on a strong note, scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the match including a kill by Luis Kannee and two kills by Jackson Gilbert. A 6-1 run by the Crusaders would follow, essentially putting the set away early. Although would end the set with some momentum, NGU was able to hang on to take it 25-15.
  • Tusculum would keep the momentum going to begin set 2, scoring 4 of the first 5. Two kills and a service ace put North Greenville back to even with the Pioneers. The set remained even until a 5-1 Tusculum run made the score 17-12. NGU would get a small run going late, but TU ultimately went on to take the second set 25-22.
  • Momentum would swing back and forth throughout the 3rd set. With neither team able to take a commanding lead, extra points would go on to be required, with the Crusaders ending up with the set win 27-25.
  • The Crusaders would make quick work of things in the 4th set, getting out to a 7-2 lead. Tusculum would fight back to pull within one, but an 11-4 run by NGU would prove to be too much to handle for the Pioneers. North Greenville would finish the match with a 25-15 set win.

  • In familiar fashion, Jackson Gilbert led the way with 13 kills and 25 total attacks. He also recorded 2 blocks.
  • Brandon Baker had a strong match, posting 8 kills and 21 total attacks.
  • Emanuel Adames put together a strong collegiate debut with 8 kills and 15 total attacks.

  • NGU will head to Gaffney, SC to face the Limestone Saints on Wednesday, January 20th.
