Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders shocked the conference-leading Barton Bulldogs with a thrilling 3-2 victory. After dropping the opening set, NGU recovered to win sets two and three. Barton fought back with a fourth set win to force a fifth set, but North Greenville would not be denied and were able to complete the upset. Jackson Gilbert had a dominating performance with 20 kills and a .432 attack percentage.S
Barton dominated the opening set early on, scoring ten of the first fourteen points. North Greenville would fight back to get back into the set including a 5-1 run, but a late momentum swing by BC proved to be too much for the Crusaders as Barton would take the set 25-18.
NGU was able to get off to a fast start to begin the set, scoring the first four points. The Bulldogs fought back with a 4-1 run to trail by just one point. From there the momentum would swing back and forth throughout the remainder of the set. With the score tied at 21-21, North Greenville was able to get the final momentum swing with a 4-1 run to take the set 25-22.
After Barton took a 9-4 lead, NGU took the momentum with a 5-1 run. Both teams would trade points for awhile until two major momentum swings happened late in the set. Trailing 17-15, Barton went on a 5-1 run of its own to lead 20-18. However, NGU went on to dominate the remainder of the set, scoring seven of the final eight points to win the set 25-21.
The Bulldogs once again scored early with a 5-1 run. North Greenville would slowly work to close the gap and tie the set at 10-10. Tied again at 14-14, BC would dominate the rest of the set, scoring eleven of fifteen to win it 25-18.
With the two teams quickly taking a point, the seesaw battle continued with both teams putting together a 4-0 run to tie the set at 5-5. The set would go on to be tied six more times with neither team able to pull away from the other. Tied 11-11, North Greenville closed the set with four of the final five points to win it 15-12 and close out the match.
Jackson Gilbert had a solid performance with 20 kills out of 37 total attacks for a .432 attack percentage. He also posted 4 digs, a solo block, and a service ace.
Aaron Campbell recorded 16 kills, 38 total attacks, 3 digs, 2 block assists, and a solo block.
Sergio Carrillo contributed with 41 assists, 2 kills, 2 digs, and a solo block.
The Crusaders will begin a three-game stretch on the road, starting on Friday, February 8th against the Emmanuel Lions in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
