Fairfield, CT – North Greenville men’s volleyball dropped the first of a two game set with the Pioneers of Sacred Heart on Friday night 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 15-25).
The Crusaders struggled to get anything going on offense as they hit just .147 on the day. Matthew McManaway and Grayson Lawrence led NGU with seven kills each. Alexander Schinzing had 24-assists and a team high five digs while Aaron Campbell led the team with two block assists.
North Greenville kept the first two sets close and was able to nab the lead several times during the frames. The short handed Crusaders were unable to pull away though as the Sacred Heart defense finished with 12-blocks at the net, leaving NGU’s offense slightly off balance.
NGU looked for other sources of offense including the service game, dishing out four aces as well as finishing the day with four solo blocks but the Pioneers hit .456 on the day and proved too strong form the Crusaders who will wrap up a long road trip on Saturday afternoon. Christopher DeLucie led the charge for Sacred Heart with a game high 10-kills. The Pioneers had two other players with nine kills and one with eight.
Sacred Heart is NGU’s third northern opponent in three days after playing Princeton and the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Wednesday and Thursday. The Crusaders will take on Sacred Heart once more on Saturday before heading back south for the home opener, scheduled for January 20th against Barton. NGU and the Pioneers will play tomorrow afternoon at 2pm.
