The North Greenville University men's volleyball team will host Clemson University and Liberty University this week in a pair of exhibition matches as the Crusaders continue their preparation for their second season in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders will take on Clemson Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Hayes Gym and face off against Liberty Friday, Nov. 13 at 3:00 p.m.
NGU will also host a scrimmage with Conference Carolinas opponents Erskine and Belmont Abbey Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
Head Coach Dr. Fred Battenfield's Crusaders will be bigger and more athletic and have some depth at outside hitter after being thin at that position last year. NGU will be anchored by its sophomore middles Matthew McManaway (3rd team All-Conference Carolinas) and Luuga Vailu'u, who was named the National Freshman of the Week at the end of last season. Also, sophomore setter Alexander Schinzing, and sophomore opposite Connor Rhine lead the returnees along with sophomore libero Dustin King, who was second in the nation last year in digs per set.
Other veterans returning for NGU include Silas Jenkins (SO L/DS), and Jacob Jenkins (SR MB).
The Crusaders reached the Conference Carolinas playoffs in their first year, and Battenfield has brought in a strong recruiting class and hopes to move up a few spots in the rankings this season. Top newcomers for NGU include Jon Childes (6-6 Grad), Caleb Arelus (6-3 SO), Grayson Lawrence (6-4 FR), Aaron Campbell (6-5 OP), and Chris Moy (6-4 S/OH).
