Tigerville, S.C. - North Greenville jumped to an early lead on Tuesday night but dropped three consecutive sets as the Lions of Emmanuel College earned a 3-1 (25-16, 29-31, 18-25, 25-19) win over NGU.
North Greenville seemed to set the tone of Tuesday night's match with a dominating 25-16 win in the opening frame. The Crusaders knocked down 12-dills during the set while holding the Lions to just nine kills to go along with nine errors.
The tide turned in the second set as the Lions evened the score at 1-1. The Crusaders trailed late but evened the score at 24-24, forcing the game into extra sets. The back and forth battle carried on into the 30's as the Lions scored back to back points, one of which was an NGU error to take a 31-29 win.
Emmanuel would gain the lead in the next frame as they took a 25-18 win. The Crusaders would find themselves in a seven point hole, late in the fourth set but would cut the deficit to just four points as Emmanuel led 22-18. The match would end though as the Lions scored three of the next four points, downing NGU 25-19.
Matthew McManaway led North Greenville with 11-kills while Caleb Arelus added 10. Grayson Lawrence led the Crusaders with 36-assists while Jon Childes added two service aces. Dustin King led all players with 17-digs while Luuga Vailu'u finished with five block assists.
North Greenville fell to 11-10 overall and 6-7 in league play. The Crusaders will host Belmont Abbey on March 29th at 7pm in Hayes Gymnasium.
