Tigerville, SC - The NGU men's volleyball team just loves to play five game matches and Saturday's non-conference match with Alderson Broaddus University (WV) was no exception. After dropping games one and two 25-22, 25-21, the Crusaders battled the Battlers and rallied to win the next two games 25-22 and 30-28.
That set up the deciding fifth set and the crowd saw a classic confrontation that could have gone either way. Broaddus took a 9-5 lead but the Crusaders fought back behind Luuga Vailu'u to pull to 9-7. The Battlers pushed their lead to 12-10, but two kills by Curtis Westra and one by Jake Jenkins got NGU to within one point at 14-13. However, Broaddus' Will Ruiz scored on a kill to end the match at 15-13.
North Greenville was led by Vailu'u who had a career high 20 kills. He was backed by Westra with 12, Connor Rhine with nine and Matthew McManaway and Robbie McCoy with eight. Freshman setter Carlos Suarez, making only his second start of the year, dished out 49 assists and had 12 digs. Rhine had 11 digs and Westra 10 digs for NGU. Obenda Besongngem led Broaddus with 21 kills.
NGU fell to 7-12 on the year while the visitors raised their record to 10-3.
The Crusaders will host Holy Names University of Oakland, California on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
