Tigerville, SC - Defending Conference Carolinas men's volleyball champion Erskine College made its first appearance in Hayes Gym against the first year NGU men's program, and despite repeated challenges by the Crusaders in all three games, the Flying Fleet prevailed 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19.
NGU tied the score 15-15 in game one, but the Flying Fleet notched three service aces, and got two kills from Mike Michelau and Roberto Perez to close out game one. The Crusaders did exactly the same in set two, trailing only 17-15, but three hitting errors and kills by Perez and Mike Kawa allowed Erskine to pull ahead to win game two.
Game three would be no different as the young Crusaders against matched the Fleet point for point and were behind 13-11. However, Perez scored four times from the back row and NGU could not keep up. They rallied behind three consecutive blocks late in the game, two by Connor Rhine and another by Luuga Vailu'u to pull to within 22-18. However, Mike Kawa had a kill and NGU made two errors to allow Erskine to complete the match.
NGU (7-11/2-8 CC) was led by Matthew McManaway with seven kills and Curtis Westra had six. Alexander Schinzing had 20 assists. Perez led Erskine (11-3/8-1 CC) with 14 kills and Michelau added 11.
North Greenville will host Alderson Broaddus (WV) Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and Holy Names University) on Tuesday also at 7:00 p.m.
