CRUSADERS FORCE FIFTH SET BUT FALL TO BOBCATS

Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville men's volleyball team fell to 2-7 in Conference Carolinas play, Wednesday night after a 3-2 loss to Lees-McRae.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 set lead after taking the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21. NGU led the Bobcats 20-18 late in the frame, but four straight points for LMC earned the Bobcats a 23-21 lead late in the first. The Crusaders pulled to within 24-23 but a kill by Brady Markle would earn the Bobcats a first set win.

NGU would lead early in the second set, before the Bobcats took a 14-10 advantage. NGU would lead 20-19, but a late 6-1 surge would lead the Bobcats to the set two victory over North Greenville, forcing the Crusaders to win the next two to send the game into a fifth set.

The Crusaders would do just that, taking the third and fourth sets by the same score of 25-22. The Crusaders took over with the score at 13-13, taking the lead 14-13 and never looking back, leading to the finish. The Crusaders would never trail in the fourth set leading by as many as five points.

The Crusaders led early in the bonus set, but the Bobcats would work their way into a comfortable 11-5 lead after snapping off six unanswered points. The Crusaders scored three of the next four points, but the Bobcats put the game away with a 3-0 run, earning the 3-2 set win with a 15-8 set five win.

NGU had four players with double-figure kills as Matthew McManaway and Curtis Westra both scored 14 while Luuga Vailu'u put away 12 kills. Connor Rhine had 11. Alexander Schinzing had 47 assists. Vailu'u led NGU with four block assists while Westra dished out two service aces.

NGU is now 7-10 on the season with a busy weekend coming up. The Crusaders will host Erskine College on Friday night at 7pm and Alderson Broaddaus at 7pm on Saturday.
