Men's Volleyball Announces First Signing Class
Tigerville, SC – In an era of expansion at the Univeristy, the North Greenville athletic department is proud to announce the first ever signing class for the Crusader Men’s Volleyball program.

“What an incredible experience it’s been working to build a brand new men’s volleyball program at North Greenville University,” said Dr. Fred Battenfield, the first –year head coach of the Crusader program.  “Luke (Harvell, assistant coach) and I have spent many hours identifying and signing a solid recruiting class that includes several talented athletes that were highly recruited.” 

“I am highly encouraged by the young men who have demonstrated the courage to come to an unknown entity in NGU,” he added.  “We have a diverse group coming from four states and Canada so far and they all have competed on national level club teams.”

Martin Alcox- 6’2” – 175lbs – OH – Chapel Hill, NC – Carrboro High School 

Alcox is a member of the Triangle Volleyball Club in Raleigh, North Carolina where he was coached by Brian Poppe and Phil Hanson. The outside hitter has also played club volleyball for two years and was selected for the 2013 USAV HP A2 program. Alcox is a two-sport athlete as he also played basketball for four years for Carrboro High School in Carrboro, NC and received the Captains Award for the 2013-2014 season. Off of the court, he has logged over 100 hours of community service including volunteering with his club’s youth volleyball programs and at a local elementary school.

Jacob Jenkins-6’4” – 220lbs  – MB – Laurens, SC – Laurens High School 

Currently a sophomore at North Greenville, Jenkins has a wealth of athletic ability and is still learning the game of volleyball.  He is a strong player with outstanding vertical leap who will develop with intensive training and experience. Jenkins played basketball, football and tennis in high school, and was an All-Region tennis standout.  

Silas Jenkins – 5’9” – 150lbs – L – Midlothian , VA – Clover Hill High School 

Jenkins possesses much experience in the sport of men’s volleyball, having played at both the high school and club level for four seasons. While at Clover Hill High School Jenkins was named varsity team captain as a junior and senior while also being named to the All-District Academic team during both seasons. At the club level Jenkins helped his squad win the Old Dominion Regional Tournament and earned a #1 ranking in the state of Virginia.

Dustin King – 5’10” – 150lbs – L/DS – Haines City, FL – Haines City High School 

King is a member of the Orlando Gold Volleyball Club where he was a captain during the 2013 winter and summer seasons. He has played volleyball for two years while maintaining a 4.2 GPA and ranking 5th overall in his high school class. King was a member of the National Honor society, Environmental Club, FBLA, and AMP Academy while at Haines City High School. 

Matthew McManaway - 6’7” – 235lbs – MB – Mt. Vernon, OH – Mt. Vernon High School 

McManaway was an integral part in leading Mt. Vernon High School to a #1 state ranking as a senior while compiling a 46-17 record in his high school career. As a sophomore he help lead the team to a Final Four spot in the Ohio State Playoffs, while Mt. Vernon won the Ohio Capital Conference Title and made a march to the Elite Eight in his junior season. McManaway was an Ohio Capital Conference All-Conference performer as well as being named to the All-East Region team and All-Ohio team. During the Club season he played for Vanguard Volleyball Club where he was a member of the 16, 17, and 18 National Team’s for coach Shawn Parsell. Vanguard was 29-5 this past season, winning the OVR Championship with a perfect record and taking first place in the Florida Fest National Qualifier with an undefeated mark.

Connor Rhine–  6’3” – 175lbs - OPP – St. Augustine, FL – Nease High School 

Rhine is a four-year player of club volleyball in Florida where played for both Orlando Gold and the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association. He was a Florida Team Athlete in 2012, while also being named Team Captain at JJVA during both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Rhine’s teams finished first or second in numerous tournaments as well as being a 2013 USVA Nationals Participant. 

Alexander Schinzing- 6’2” – 180lbs – S – Orlando, FL – Olympia High School

Schinzing has played club volleyball for Orlando Gold for 11 seasons, while playing four seasons at the high school level as a four-year starter and two-year captain. No stranger to success, he led his team to two AAU National Championships as well as four consecutive Regional titles from 2009-2012. Schinzing was honored as an All-American in 2008 at the AAU National Championships while also being selected to play on Florida’s Team Florida High Performance National Team in 2012, placing 5th overall at the High Performance Championship in Des Moines.

Carlos Suarez - 5’11” – 175lbs – S/DS – San Antonio, TX – Antonian College Prep 

Suarez was a standout both on the court and in the classroom at the high school level. In school he was a member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. Suarez played club volleyball for four season for head coach Mark Papich where he was named team captain each season.

Curtis Westra – 6’4”-170lbs-OPP/OH-Alberta, CANADA-Calgary Christian High School

Westra has been involved in volleyball competition since 7th grade, having competed at the high school level for five seasons at Calgary Christian. He has seen time along each position of the front line, playing opposite, outside and middle for various teams in high school and club volleyball. No stranger to success, Westra was a member of a team that twice won the league and zone while also winning provincials this past season. As a member of various club teams Westra was a key ingredient in three Top 5 finishes at the national level.

“Matthew McManaway is probably one of the top middle hitters out of the Midwest and he will anchor the net for us for many years,” Battenfield mentioned.  “Connor Rhine is one of the top opposites out of the state of Florida, and Dustin King and Carlos Suarez are extremely talented athletes who will fill several roles with our new team.  I’m highly excited about bringing in Martin Alcox as an outside, because his athletic ability far exceeds many players.  He is just going to get better and better and I see him being a solid player in Conference Carolinas.  Curtis Westra will be the player that I think will surprise a lot of people.  He loves to the play the game and is a gifted athlete.  I have a lot of respect for these guys who are willing to come to South Carolina and help us grow the game in an area where there just isn’t a lot of boy’s club volleyball.”

With more athletes expected to commit within the coming weeks, Dr. Battenfield and his team will continue focus on opening the inaugural season in January 2015 in Tigerville.
