Crusaders Shine At Conference Championships

Banner Elk, NC – The North Greenville track & field teams competed in the 2014 Conference Carolinas Championship as the men’s team finished 2nd overall and the women place 6th on the campus of Lees McRae College over the weekend.

The men gained points in the both the field and track events with freshman Terry Davis leading the way in the field. Davis, an All-Conference performer for the Crusaders, placed 1st in the triple jump with a distance of 14.65 meters, while setting a school-record in the long jump with a distance of 7.02 meters for a 1st place finish.

Sophomore Kreig Lowe also had a strong showing in the field, finishing 2nd overall in the shot put with a throw of 14.33 meters, while recording a 4th place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 39.29 meters. In the pole vault, freshman Jared Bolin cleared a height of 3.85 meters for a 2nd place finish with sophomore Jacob Carr finishing third after clearing a height of 3.40 meters.

On the track, sophomore Devin Wannamaker claimed three 1st place finishes. In the 100 meter dash, Wannamaker took the title with a time of 10.99 seconds. His other individual titles came in the 110 meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.81 seconds to set a school-record, while also finishing first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.05 seconds.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Wannamaker, Dominic Powell, Ravon Wamer and Jonathan Williams finished 2nd overall with a time of 3:20.73 as Wamer and Powell finished 4th and 5th respectively in the 800 meter run and Ahmad Nesbitt claimed 3rd place finishes in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.

For the women, freshman Megan Goodson set a conference meet record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.20 meters, while sophomore Zoe Engwall finished 2nd overall after clearing a height of 2.90 meters.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Mercedes Cunningham, Shiobhan Fraser, Georgia Delts and Ambria Shaw earned a 3rd place finish with a time of 50.32 seconds, while the 4x400 relay team of Engwall, Shaw, Fraser and Delts ran a time of 4:04.63 for a 4th place finish and a school-record.

Fraser also finished 3rd individually in the triple jump with a distance of 11.45 meters as freshman Monae Boyles was 3rd overall in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:55.95.

“I’m proud of every individual’s performance,” said head coach Jacob Simms. “We are looking forward to the improvements we will make in the offseason. We would like to thank all of the student-athletes, coaches, administrators and parents that made this season possible.”
