Columbia, SC – Sophomore Jared Watkins set a school record for men’s indoor high jump and Raivyn Chancellor earned her first career victory in the women’s weight throw as both the men’s and women’s track field teams competed in the USC Indoor Meet #2 on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
Watkins school record of 6’ 8 ¾” in the high jump was good enough to earn him a tie for first place with Bethune-Cookman’s Keron Stoute. Also setting a school record for the men’s team was junior Zach Epting who threw 41’ 10 ¾” in the shot put, while Kreig Lowe set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 40’ 11 ½”.
On the women’s side, Chancellor’s school record throw of 44’ 9 ½” in the weight throw helped her claim her first collegiate win, while also recording a third place finish in the shot put with a school-record throw of 40’ 9” to set a new personal best.
Mercedes Cunningham also set a school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.56 and a second place finish. Allison Beam earned a fifth place finish and set a school record with a time of 2:43.77 in the 800 meter dash, while the women’s 4x400 meter relay team finished third overall with a time of 4:31.13, a new school record.
“We had an outstanding performance today,” said head coach Michael Bayne. “I can’t point out just one athlete because as a team we performed so well. I’m looking forward to our team competing again next weekend.”
Both teams will travel to Winston-Salem, NC on Feb. 1 to compete in the Hilton Garden Invitational.
