Columbia, SC- North Greenville University men’s and women’s track and field team competed at the University of South Carolina against twelve other schools in the Gamecock Open Meet. By the end of the day, the Crusaders walked away with five first place finishes.

All five first place finishes came from the men’s team. Freddie Martino continued his dominance on the track by taking first place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.75 seconds. Kylan Steinert also had a first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, posting a time of 58 seconds. Jared Watkins cleared a height of 6’10" in the men’s high jump to give him a first place and a new personal record. Justin Bishop won the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 47.13 meters (154’7"). The men’s 4x400 meter relay team composed of Jacob Simms, Ravon Wamer, Freddie Martino, and Kylan Steinert took first place with a time of 3:24.52.

The women’s track and field team also did well against stout competition. Nastassia Sanford had a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.56 seconds. Kelly Knutson ran a time of 5:25 in the 1500 meter run giving her a sixth place finish. The women’s 4x100 meter relay team had a strong outing posting a time of 51.68 seconds putting them in second place for the event. Kaitlyn Pierce finished fourth place in the high jump competition posting a height of 1.62 meters (5’3").

The University of South Carolina track and field team had eleven first place finishes, putting them in the number one overall team position for the day. In addition to the five first place finishes for the Crusaders, both Jared Watkins and Kaitlyn Pierce qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Qualifiers for the Division II National Championship in Pueblo, CO. Both Jared and Kaitlyn should be notified by the first week in May on whether or not they are selected to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Division II National Championships.

North Greenville track and field teams will be back in action this Saturday, April 7th to compete at the Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, SC.
